Welcome to Blind Audacity—where window treatment wisdom meets real-life adventures, usually served with a little humor and a dash of Brazilian spice.

Today’s story travels between Boston’s icy winters and Tampa’s endless sunshine, with a quick stop in the world of interior shutters, one of the most versatile window treatments available for homeowners.

But first, a quick update from the Shades In Place family.

A Growing Family (and a Full Circle Moment)

A couple of years ago, I shared the news that our installer extraordinaire Kevin had just welcomed baby Olivia into the world.

Fast forward to today and Olivia is now two years old, and she has a little brother, Mateo, who is already six months old.

Life moves fast.

Kevin actually spent a full year living here in Tampa, helping us grow operations in Florida. But as many parents eventually realize, when kids arrive, family support becomes priceless.

So Kevin and his family made the decision to return to Massachusetts, where grandparents, relatives, and plenty of helping hands are waiting to enjoy those two little ones.

And honestly, I can’t blame them.

Sometimes the best move in life is simply being closer to the people who matter most.

The good news is that Shades In Place clients in Massachusetts will once again benefit from Kevin’s experience and craftsmanship, something many of our longtime customers already know well. Having him back in the Boston area means our New England clients continue to receive the same level of professional installation and expertise that has been part of the Shades In Place story for years.

Boston Winters vs. Tampa Sunshine

Every time I travel back to Boston, I’m reminded how different life feels compared to Florida.

In Tampa, it’s:

  • palm trees
  • sunshine
  • sandals most of the year

In Boston, it’s:

  • snow boots
  • freezing winds
  • layers that make you feel like a human burrito.

But whether you live in New England or Florida, homeowners face many of the same challenges when it comes to their windows:

  • temperature control
  • privacy
  • managing natural light
  • choosing a design that actually lasts

And that’s where interior shutters come into the conversation.

Why Interior Shutters Work in Both Climates

Interior shutters are one of the few window treatments that perform beautifully in both cold and hot climates.

At Shades In Place, we install shutters from trusted brands like:

  • Norman
  • Hunter Douglas
  • Alta
  • Graber
  • Horizons

These manufacturers offer a range of materials, finishes, and custom options designed to match both traditional and modern homes.

But the real beauty of shutters is how well they adapt to different climates.

Interior Shutters in Boston: Keeping the Heat Inside

In colder climates like Boston and throughout Massachusetts, interior shutters help create an additional barrier between the window glass and the living space.

This helps to:

  • reduce heat loss during winter
  • improve comfort near windows
  • lower heating bills
  • add timeless architectural style

Many historic homes across New England already feature shutters because they complement traditional architecture beautifully.

Interior Shutters in Tampa: Blocking Sun and Heat

Down here in Tampa, the challenge flips.

Instead of keeping heat inside, we want to keep the Florida sun from overheating the house.

Interior shutters help by:

  • blocking harsh sunlight
  • reducing indoor heat buildup
  • protecting furniture from UV damage
  • allowing adjustable light control throughout the day

It’s one reason shutters remain a popular window treatment across Florida homes.

Why Homeowners Love Shutters

Beyond insulation and light control, shutters offer several advantages:

✔ Extremely durable
✔ Easy to clean
✔ Custom fitted for each window
✔ Timeless design that never goes out of style
✔ Adds long-term value to the home

Unlike many temporary window coverings, shutters often become a permanent architectural upgrade.

Life (and Windows) Are About the Right Fit

Kevin’s move back to Massachusetts reminded me of something important.

Whether you’re choosing window treatments or making life decisions, sometimes the right choice simply comes down to fit.

For Kevin, that meant being closer to family.

For homeowners, it might mean choosing a window solution that performs beautifully in every season.

And for me? It’s realizing that even after trading Boston winters for Tampa sunshine, the connections we build along the way are what truly matter.
