The Setup

The team at Holly Baker Studio — a Tampa-based interior design firm we love working with — reached out about a beautiful backyard project in South Tampa. The clients had a stunning pergola with a TV mounted under it. Perfect setup for game day, family movies, sunset wine nights. The whole Florida outdoor-living dream.

Except for one tiny problem: the afternoon sun was destroying the TV viewing experience. Glare so bad you couldn’t see the screen. Heat so intense nobody wanted to sit out there until after 6 PM.

The pergola had no walls. No windows. Just open structure and a brutal western exposure.

🎓 Shade School Drop-In: Shades Aren’t Just for Windows

This is the part I want every designer (and homeowner) to hear:

“Window treatments” is a limiting phrase. What we really do is light, heat, and privacy control, and that applies to a lot more than just windows.
