No Window? No Problem. How We Helped Holly Baker Studio Solve a Tampa Pergola in 3 Weeks Flat
Olá, friends. 👋
Here’s a question I get from interior designers more often than you’d think:
“Roger, the space doesn’t have a window. Can you still help?”
Yes. A thousand times yes.
Today’s project is one of those — and it’s a great story, because it tackles two things at once: a creative product solution, and a tight deadline that would have made most installers sweat through their shirt. ☀️
The Setup
The team at Holly Baker Studio — a Tampa-based interior design firm we love working with — reached out about a beautiful backyard project in South Tampa. The clients had a stunning pergola with a TV mounted under it. Perfect setup for game day, family movies, sunset wine nights. The whole Florida outdoor-living dream.
Except for one tiny problem: the afternoon sun was destroying the TV viewing experience. Glare so bad you couldn’t see the screen. Heat so intense nobody wanted to sit out there until after 6 PM.
The pergola had no walls. No windows. Just open structure and a brutal western exposure.
Oh — and the designer needed a working solution in three weeks.
🎓 Shade School Drop-In: Shades Aren’t Just for Windows
This is the part I want every designer (and homeowner) to hear:
“Window treatments” is a limiting phrase. What we really do is light, heat, and privacy control, and that applies to a lot more than just windows.
Pergolas. Lanais. Outdoor kitchens. Screened porches. Carports. Patio extensions. Anywhere you’ve got an opening, sun, and a comfort problem, there’s almost always a shade solution that fits.
For the Holly Baker project, we went with a Sunpro motorized retractable exterior shade with cable guides. Here’s why that combination was the move:
- Retractable → invisible when not needed, so the pergola keeps its clean, designed look.
- Cable guides → critical in Florida. Without them, exterior shades sway in the wind and look terrible (and stress the hardware). Cables keep the shade tracking straight, even in a gulf breeze.
- Color-matched to the existing decor → the shade blends, doesn’t compete.
- Motorized → one button, shade down before kickoff. Done.
When deployed: sun handled, glare gone, TV finally watchable.
When retracted: the pergola looks exactly as the designer intended.
That’s what good window treatment work looks like in 2026 — invisible when it should be, doing serious work when it needs to.
🚩 Roger’s Red Flag Radar: For Designers Vetting a Vendor
If you’re a designer reading this, here’s what to look for in a window treatment partner, beyond just “they do good work”:
- They actually pick up the phone when your timeline gets crunched.
- They suggest products you might not have considered instead of just quoting what you ask for.
- They protect your design vision — meaning the install looks like your room, not their product brochure.
- They handle the homeowner directly when needed, so you’re not stuck playing telephone.
- They show up on time and clean up after themselves (you’d be amazed how often this is the dealbreaker).
A vendor that hits all five is a vendor you can build a long-term partnership with. And in our business, partnerships are everything.
What Holly Baker Studio Had to Say:
“We absolutely love Shades in Place! As an interior design firm, we want to provide only the best for our clients. Roger and team are amazing to work with and do a superb job. They are our go-to for our projects and we know we can trust their quality and expertise, plus they’re lovely people. Highly recommend!”

That “go-to for our projects” line? That’s what we work for. Not the one-off sale — the long-term trust that turns a vendor into a partner.
For the Designers Reading This 🎨
If you’re an interior designer, decorator, or stager in Tampa Bay and you’ve been burned by a window treatment vendor before — slow turnaround, poor communication, products that don’t match the spec — let’s have a conversation.
We work with the trade differently. Faster turnarounds. Direct communication. Products that hold up to Florida sun and Florida humidity. And a level of installation polish that won’t embarrass you in front of your clients.
Our To the Trade program is built specifically for this, and we’d love to be your next go-to.
