From Boston to Tampa: The Shutter Client Who Keeps Coming Back

Most of the stories I share here start with a problem — a fishbowl slider, a glaring pergola, a bedroom that never got dark. This one’s different. The “problem” was tiny: a single shutter sill knocked loose. But the story behind it is the one I’m actually proud of, because it took years to earn.

Let me back up.

The Setup

I first worked with this client years ago — up in Boston. Full house of plantation shutters, the whole nine yards. Then life happened, he relocated to Tampa, and when it came time to dress the windows in his new Florida home… he called me. Again. A second full house of shutters, this time in Lutz.

Think about that for a second. He didn’t Google “shutters near me.” He didn’t grab three quotes off a marketplace. He picked up the phone and called the guy from Boston — 1,300 miles and one big move later. That’s not luck. That’s trust, and trust is the only thing in this business that actually compounds.

Fast forward to this last visit. His home builder was doing a warranty repair and, in the process, knocked one of our shutters loose from the frame — dislocated the sill. So he called me a third time. I came out, repaired the sill, and got it square and solid again. Quick fix. But the fact that he called me to fix it,  instead of the builder who caused it, tells you everything.

Here’s something most homeowners never hear until it’s too late: your brand-new house is probably not perfectly square.

Sounds crazy, but it’s true. Window boxes come out of construction a little off, not level, not plumb, not quite square. On most things you’d never notice. On plantation shutters? You notice immediately. A shutter frame is a rigid, precise thing. Drop it into an out-of-square opening and you get ugly gaps, panels that don’t close flush, and louvers that fight you.

A real installer’s job is to make a perfect-looking install inside an imperfect opening. That means shimming, scribing, and taking the time to fit the frame to reality, not just screwing it in and calling it a day. On this project the window boxes weren’t square, and we went to the mat to make sure every Norman Woodlore Plus composite shutter (in clean Pure White) sat perfectly square anyway.

Two flags on this one.

Flag #1: Watch who comes back for the small stuff. A loose sill is a no-commission, no-glory service call. Plenty of companies won’t bother, or they’ll make you wait three weeks. But how a company treats the tiny repairs tells you exactly how they’ll treat the big ones. If an installer disappears after the check clears, you didn’t hire a partner, you hired a transaction. 🚩

Flag #2: “The builder can fix it.” When another trade damages your window treatments, the builder will often offer to patch it up. Don’t. Shutters are precision work, and the person who installed them is the person who should repair them. If your original installer won’t come back out, that’s a flag for next time.

Your Turn

If you’ve got plantation shutters going into a new build, or a new-to-you home, do yourself a favor and ask your installer one question: “What happens when the opening isn’t square?” If they don’t have a real answer, keep looking.
