Feliz Cinco de Mayo (and a little life update)
May has a funny way of showing up with confetti… and a couple of emotional plot twists. So before I start mixing margaritas and memories, let me share a few milestones—while I’m still sober enough to spell Massachusetts correctly.
Twenty-four years ago, also in May, I left São Paulo, Brazil (a city of about 12 million people, yes, million) and landed in the United States chasing the American Dream. Boston was my first stop. Cold weather. Big hopes. Zero clue. No English. No experience driving on icy roads. And in the early 2000s? No Google Maps, no Waze., just vibes, paper directions, and the occasional (frequent, actually) panic.
Some days the American Dream felt less like a dream and more like a “surprise obstacle course.” But resilience is in my DNA. I had a mission: learn English, save money, and build something of my own. I enrolled at Harvard to study English. On weekends, I delivered pizzas to speed up the savings.
In 2004, I bought a condo and renovated it myself on weekends. By 2006, after my cousin introduced me to the window coverings world, I became an installer. Soon after, Shades In Place was born. And in 2023—yep, also in May—Ana and I moved to Tampa Bay to start a new chapter.
Tampa Bay sunshine is beautiful… until it’s not
If you live in Tampa Bay (or anywhere nearby), you already know the truth: The sunshine is gorgeous, the heat is serious, and privacy can feel like a luxury when your neighbor’s lanai is basically a front-row seat. That’s why so many homeowners here ask the same questions:
- “How do I reduce heat without turning my living room into a cave?”
- “How do I get privacy during the day and at night?”
- “Can I control my shades without walking around the house like I’m doing steps for my smartwatch?”
Good news: you’ve got options. Great options. And yes, this is where custom window treatments in Tampa Bay stop being “nice to have” and start being “why didn’t I do this sooner?”
The window-treatment lesson May keeps teaching me
Life gives you seasons. Windows do too. Sometimes you want to let the light in. Sometimes you want to block the heat. Sometimes you want privacy, peace, and a room that feels like a retreat. That’s exactly how I think about window coverings: not as “decor,” but as comfort, control, and confidence, especially in a climate like ours.
So let me spotlight two of my favorite solutions for Tampa Bay homes.
Cellular shades: comfort, privacy, and real heat control
Cellular shades (also called honeycomb shades) are one of the smartest choices for homeowners who want a clean look and practical performance. They’re especially popular for custom window treatments in Tampa Bay because they help with the two things Florida loves to hand out for free: sun and heat.
Why Tampa Bay homeowners love cellular shades:
- Heat reduction and insulation: The honeycomb structure helps trap air, which can reduce heat transfer through the window.
- Privacy without feeling boxed in: Choose light-filtering fabrics for daytime glow or room-darkening options for bedrooms.
- Soft, modern style: They work with coastal, contemporary, transitional—pretty much anything.
- Great for bedrooms and living rooms: Anywhere you want comfort and calm.
A quick pro tip: If you want privacy but still want natural light, ask about top-down/bottom-up options. It’s one of those features you don’t realize you need… until you have it.
And if you’re wondering what this looks like in real life, I can show you fabric options, opacity levels, and what “light-filtering” actually means at 4:30 p.m. in Florida.
Motorized shades: the “why didn’t I do this sooner?” upgrade
Motorized shades aren’t just a luxury anymore. They’re a practical solution for real life. If you have tall windows, hard-to-reach glass, or you’re simply tired of adjusting five shades every afternoon like it’s your daily workout, motorization is a game-changer.
What motorized shades solve (fast):
- Heat control on autopilot: Set schedules so shades adjust when the sun hits hardest.
- Privacy instantly: One button, one app, or one voice command.
- Consistency: No more “we only close the shades when we remember.”
- Cleaner look: No dangling cords.
Brands we love for motorization: We often work with trusted names like Lutron, and we can pair motorization with premium shade lines from Hunter Douglas and Alta depending on your goals, budget, and style. If you’re a “smart home” person (or married to one), motorization also plays nicely with many home automation setups.
What should you choose: cellular, motorized… or both?
Here’s the honest answer: it depends on your windows and your lifestyle.
- If you want maximum comfort + energy-conscious performance, cellular shades are a strong starting point.
- If you want daily convenience + smart control, motorized shades are worth a serious look.
- If you want the best of both worlds, you can absolutely explore motorized cellular shades for key rooms.
The best way to decide is to look at window size and sun exposure, privacy needs (street-facing vs. backyard), room function (bedroom, living room, office), and your tolerance for Florida heat at 4:30 p.m. If you want, I can also help you prioritize: “Do the worst windows first” is a very respectable strategy.

If you want to speed things up, include these in your message:
- Your city (Tampa, Sarasota, St. Pete, etc.)
- A couple window photos
- Whether you care most about heat, privacy, or “make it look amazing”
In the words of my friend Mike: “I refuse to have a bad day.” Same. And if the Florida sun is trying to bully your living room into becoming a sauna, let’s refuse that too.
Cheers,
Ever feel like the Florida sun is running your schedule (and your shades)?
